History

The infusion of the radical faith of the Joshua spirit propelled the humble beginning of Gateway City Church in 2008 by the leadership of Pastors Edward and Selina Lim, together with 5 other adults and 3 children. The strong call of God was evident and direct as He prepared both these leaders through the Book of Joshua prior to the birth of this vision. The vision brewed in the secret place for many years before God gave the blueprint to begin His work.

The outrageous small number did not dampen our spirit but compelled us to seek God and believe His plan with an undivided heart, embracing His promises and declaring His victories to stand as the gateway of God’s blessings for the city and beyond. Our city, Penang is singled out as one of the major gateways to the nation. Thus we sought the Lord as we embraced the name “Gateway” and set foot in a strategic location, e-Gate at a rented hall on a weekly basis with the launching of the church in January 2008. Gateway City Church was blessed and commended by Reservoir Garden Baptist Church. We then became a member of National Evangelical Christians Fellowship (NECF) since 2010.

In May 2008, God prompted us to purchase a unit in that building to set up our office base not knowing the rented hall was not available anymore. So within 5 days after we got news of its unavailability, we moved into the new place all by divine intervention. His gracious favour was evidently displayed in the swift move. The gradual growth to 40 people in 3 years threw us out of our comfort zone again (before we became complacent) – to move into a new sanctuary which could house 80-100 people in January 2011, located at the same floor of our office base. We will continue to make God famous as we appropriate His promises and take serious heed of His command…

“I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates—all the Hittite country—to the Mediterranean Sea in the west. No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them.” (Joshua 1:3-6)
